The first volume in Mann's great tetralogy, telling the story of the Biblical Joseph's rise as a statesman in Egypt, his conduct during the epic famine, and his restoration to his father Jacob. Easily the most elusive of the four books in the first printing, and scarce in this condition. First Printing. Octavo (19.5cm); black sateen cloth, with titles stamped in gilt on spine and in blind to front cover; yellow topstain; Borzoi-patterned endpapers; dustjacket; vi,428,[6]pp. Publisher's price neatly rubber-stamped on a terminal blank, else a fresh, Fine copy, with the topstain bright and unfaded. Dustjacket is unclipped (priced $2.50), the variant with the "Recommended by the Book-of-the-Month Club" sticker at mid-spine; pinpoint wear to base of spine and lower front flap fold, with the barest hint of sunning to spine panel; very Near Fine.
