Edited, with an introduction by John A. Scott. A classic account of life among slaves and slaveholders in the U.S. South. Golden brown illustrated wrappers are bright and clean, unmarked, with light wear to extremities. Tight and square binding. Internals very clean, no markings, no creasing. Fanny Kemble was on the English stage in the 19th century; in 1830, she was on tour in America and met and married Pierce Butler, from a wealthy family whose income was largely from the family rice and cotton plantation on the Sea Islands of Georgia. 600 slaves worked on the plantation, Fanny was shocked by what she saw and recorded her observations in a journal written as letters to a friend, They were never sent and never published until after her divorce in 1863. They incited controversy when published but lapsed out of print after the Civil War, until this book was reissued in 1961.
