About This Item
London: The Folio Society, 1990. Very Good with light wear. A Journey to the Western Isles of Scotland by Samuel Johnson, A Journal of a Tour in the Hebrides by James Boswell. The book is tight with solid hinges on green cloth illustrated boards. There is a quarter-inch gap between the headband and the spine head. The textblock is clean with no writing, bookplate, or markings and not BCE, ex-library, or remaindered. Portraits and hand-colored aquatints by William Daniell and black and white illustrations throughout. No dust jacket, as issued. The original slipcase is Near Fine with light wear. 412 pages. 6½ x 10" tall.
The year was 1773, Samuel Johnson was sixty-three and James Boswell was thirty-two years old. The journey was almost too late because the war of 1745 was the beginning of the end of ancient Scotland, and the processes of change in the Highlands were already gathering speed.
