About This Item

London: Blackie & Son Limited. Good+ in Good+ dust jacket. 1947. New Edition. Hardcover. Shiny blue cloth-covered boards with gilt titling to the spine and front panel has a bright gilt illustration of a booted climber/hiker with rifle and shoulder bag slung over his shoulder. A similar vignette figure in b/w is on the title page. Book is tight and square, all hinges in and out secure, with slightly 'pushed' spine ends from storage - negligible. In the original publisher's pictorial dust- jacket. 'BLACKIE'S FAMOUS BOOKS' printed on the foot of the d/j spine. On the rear cover is printed 'A Selection from Blackie's Library of Famous Books' & at the foot is the legend 'Uniform with this Volume'. The dust-jacket has some closed tears and a few light marks but is NOT price-clipped, still showing the price 4/6 net. The d/j is now in a new protective clear - removable - bookfilm plastic cover and looks VG. NOT dated, but earlier than the later green cloth/black titled versions. UNillustrated, and that would add to the assumption of a publication date of probably just post war ? Page fore-edges have some scattered foxing (tan spotting) . Internally a former owner has written a recommendation in purple on the front free endpaper - "8 1/2. V. Good Adventure Book" - o/w no other inscriptions or marks inside. 224 pp. A Version of Jules Vernes' classic 'A Journey To The Centre Of The Earth' by Isobel C. Fortey. See Images. ; Blackie's Library of Famous Books; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .

Synopsis

Journey to the Centre of the Earth, also translated as A Journey to the Interior of the Earth, is a classic 1864 science fiction novel by Jules Verne. The story involves a German professor (Otto Lidenbrock in the original French, Professor Von Hardwigg in the most common English translation) who believes there are volcanic tubes going toward the center of the Earth.
