Hard cover published by Dewey Publishing in 1907. No dust jacket. Covers have some stains and scuffing. Spine is worn at the ends and along edges. Corners of covers are worn, with some splitting of the cloth. Inside front cover has a bookplate from the previous owner. Front endpaper has an inscription, and is tanned except from where the bookplate on opposite page touched it. Inner front hinged is partially split. Inside back cover has a bookstore sticker at bottom. Pages have slight tanning and deckled side edges. Endpapers have tanning. Book is in good condition. Large 8vo, 384 pages, 3.4 lb.; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 384 pages .

San Francisco: Dewey Publishing, 1907. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. 1st printing. Pictorial cloth. In one volume titled JOURNEYS OF OBSERVATION are what might be considered two books: AMONG THE MINES OF MEXICO (255pp) & ACROSS THE SAN JUAN MOUNTAINS (130pp). The first is described: "Being the record of a journey from New York to Mexico, together with a description of the mining industry of El Oro, Pachuca, and Guanajuato, as observed in October, 1905." It is a reprint from The Mining and Scientific Press. The second is described: "Being the account of a ride over the mountainous mining regions of Southwestern Colorado, in September, 1902." It is reprinted from The Engineering and Mining Journal. This remarkable book has dozens of plates & drawings & several nice maps. The design & typeface, as well as the paper, almost make this a fine press book. Perhaps it is. Rickard was editor of the Mining and Scientific Press & was a member of several professional mining associations/societies. He was state geologist of Colorado 1895-1901. Condition good. Upper cover corner bumped. Some exposure of boards at corners, especially the bumped one. Endpapers browned. The first signature or gathering is a bit separated from the next, but has been archivally strengthened. The binding is quite sound - hinges unbroken & uncracked - which is a plus for a book of this heft. It is a thick book & the edges are untrimmed, which gives it that pleasing appearance for those who like it that way.

Publisher's sage cloth pictorially illustrated in colors after a design by Maynard Dixon, black spine and cover lettering, top edge gilt, remainder uncut. Some minor wear to extremities but overall a very attractive copy. Inscribed by the author; "With Christmas greeting from the author and the dedicatee [author's wife], Victoria [Canada], December 25, 1933."
