About This Item

London: The Book Club. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1952. First British Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. Book Club Edition . Light shelf wear and tear to unclipped DJ with faint sticker ghost to front fly and reverse toned, corners lightly bumped, fly shadows to endpapers, minor foxing to edges of reading block. ; Blue cloth boards with dark blue lettering to spine. Nice tight copy, no names or marks inside. DJ artwork by Sax. Undated but assumed 1952 the year following first publication in Britain. ; 280 pages; Set in Boston just prior and during World War II. Nothing could be more dissimilar than the two sides of Boston's famous Beacon Hill. On the slope toward the Common from Mount Vernon, the cross streets are lined with fine old houses, possessed by fine old New England families; on the slope from Mount Vernon toward Cambridge Street, dingy tenements precariously occupied by aliens are interspersed with delicatessen and other small shops, obscure offices and unpretentious eating places. And nowhere is this contrast more marked than on Joy Street. .
