About This Item
New York, Washington, Hollywood: Vantage Pres, 1966. First edition. Cloth. Near Fine/Very Good. Scarce, with only three copies found on OCLC. Oblong, 14 by 20.5 cm. Unpaginated, about 90 pages of satirical cartoons about the KKK and race relations. Some of the cartoons are ambiguous as to their intent, and not a few are most definitely anachronistic in their humor. Even when Edwards' intention might be to ridicule the Klan, by today's standards he falls afoul of not just today's standards of political correctness, but also today's norms of more widely accepted standards of taste. Not a few today would question the very notion of making light of the Klan the way Edwards does, and the racial stereotypes that he seems to accept and work off of. Nonetheless, this book offers insight into general societal attitudes towards race relations into the sixties and prior to the assassination of Martin Luther King and other upheaval that soon followed. Dust jacket with a small closed tear and some foxing on the rear. Generally clean text within.
