About This Item
Sixteen pages of sketches of various British design by Karl S. Bolander.
The sketchbook starts with the interior design of the ocean liner RMS Empress of Britain, supposedly the ship Bolander took for his trip to Europe (Britain and France). He made drawings of the art deco furniture, the design of the lounge, even some fellow travelers and the staff of the vessel. Besides his observation and the record in drawings of various small designs that caught his eyes, Bolander dedicated a page for the different chimney pots of the British Isles, one for the "Typical British Signs", for "English Fences", lamp posts, or signs in rural England. Two pages are illustrated with French material. (The rest of the sketches on three pages are by different hand, from 1933.)
Karl S. Bolander (1893-1976) was a prolific painter, craftsman, lecturer and writer, known as "America's Most Popular Art Lecturer". He was the founder, member, and director several art-institutions all over the United States. Bolander was a propagator of all kinds of hobbies, and he was also known as the "Hobby King," and claimed to have cultivated 244 personal hobbies.
