About This Item

London: Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 1976. xiii, 170pp, index, 48 bw ills, 3 maps. Or gray cloth in jacket. Jacket price clipped, with minor fading on spine. Tells for the first time the story of the Karluk, the leading ship of the Stefansson Arctic Expedition of 1913-18, which was crushed and sunk in ice almost before the expedition began. The ship's crew of 25 were left stranded on the ice while the expedition leader continued on his northern exploration, not returning for five years. In the ensuing struggle for survival eight men died moving across the ice floes, one shot himself, 2 died of malnutrition and the rest barely managed to survive until rescue came. Illustrated by photographs taken at the time, most never before published.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. 4to.
