Stanford, CA: James Ladd Delkin / Stanford University. Very Good+ in Very Good+ dust jacket. 1947. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. SIGNED EDITION. This book is in Very Good+ condition and has a Very Good+ dust jacket. The book and its contents are in mostly clean, bright condition. There is some light uneven fading and wear to all top edges of the book cover and some beginning rubbing to the bottom spine ends. The text pages are clean and bright. This copy has been signed by the author, Jean Burton on the half title page. There is also a previous owner's ink gift notation on the front endpaper. The dust jacket has several small edge nicks, tears and a couple of tiny chips missing along with some sunning to the spine and several spots of foxing, mostly to the edges. The Biographee, Katharine Felton, was an early pioneer in the field of social reform - born in Oakland, CA to a prominent San Francisco Bay area family (her father was a judge and mayor of Oakland) , she was appointed as the director of Associated Charities in San Francisco at the age of 28. In 1906, after the devastating earthquake and fire, she became the head of the local social services efforts to help deal with the many after-effects of the loss of homes, jobs, families, etc. She is credited with creating the first employment agency in the US; she helped advocate on behalf of foster care system; helped develop counseling for mentally ill and much more. Felton drafted, or helped draft nearly all of the legislation for the state of California regarding social welfare and relief. ; Signed by Author .
