Vice Admiral James Calvert was from Cleveland, Ohio and died in 2009 at the age of 88. He commanded the first vessel to surface at the North Pole. He was the 46 th. Superintendent of the Naval Academy. He commanded the fastest Atlantic crossing, the longest stretch under water, and published 2 memoirs; 1. wartime 2. polar experiences. He attended Oberlin College for 2 years before attending the Naval Academy and then Submarine School. A true hero of WW II and a real star in the Navy cap.
