As New/As New. **Collectible** Deluxe Edition -Presentation Copy ** 256 pages with a glued in letter on special stationary from the "Chief of Naval Operations -- dated 1 September 1983 Presented to Vice Admiral James Calvert, U.S. Navy, with great admiration and deep appreciation for his service to the Naval Institute as its Vice President, July 1968 to June 1972. signed James D. Watkins, Admiral, U.S. Navy and President, U.S. Naval Institute. The book is in black leather (and padded) with gilt titles (9 & 1/4 inch x 12 & 3/8 inch) The sleeve is in as new condition and very well made. Vice Admiral James Calvert was from Cleveland, Ohio and died in 2009 at the age of 88. He commanded the first vessel to surface at the North Pole. He was the 46 th. Superintendent of the Naval Academy. He commanded the fastest Atlantic crossing, the longest stretch under water, and published 2 memoirs; 1. wartime 2. polar experiences. "Silent Running ; My years on a WW II Attack Submarine" 1995. and "Surface at the Pole; The Extraordinary voyages of U.S.S. Skate. 1960. He attended Oberlin College for 2 years before attending the Naval Academy and then Submarine School. A true hero of WW II and a real star in the Navy cap. An incredible and wonderous book of color photographs of top quality by a top notch expert photographer.
