About This Item

Macmillan, London, first edition, 1989. Cloth, 8vo, 24 cm,. viii, 239 pp, [16] pp of plates. On 27 May 1942 a Czech agent, part of a team of parachutists trained by SOE, threw a bomb at a passing Mercedes. His intended victim was Reinhard Heydrich, Himmler's deputy and one of the most powerful men in the Third Reich, reckoned to be the most likely eventual successor to Hitler. Eight days later Heydrich died in agony from his wounds. The assassination sent a shock wave through the Nazi leadership and provoked ferocious reprisals against Czechs and Jews. Of these the most notorious was the total obliteration of Lidice, a Czech village, and the massacre of its inhabitants. The parachutists who carried out the assassination hid from the fury of the Nazi search in the cellar of a Prague church. Finally betrayed, they were surrounded by hundreds of Gestapo and Czech police and in the final shoot-out they defended themselves until the end, each committing suicide with his last bullet. Based on previously untouched archive material and interviews with surviving members of SOE and Czech Military Intelligence, this book tells an exciting story of danger and heroism, ending in betrayal and tragedy. It is the first popular work by an important new historian, already known for his research on the origins of the Second World War." - from the blurb. Endpapers and flaps of dustwrapper spotted, contents agetoned, otherwise Good in Good dustwrapper.
