London: Mitchell, 1867. Hardcover. Very Good. Chromolithography by the Queen's Printer Day & Son.. Folio leather-spined embossed cloth gilt on bevelled boards (rebacked tips slightly worn spine gilt darkened & dulled) All Edges Gilt. Unique gilt and illuminated chromoliths inserted into sunken card mounts back to back. Double pages except for the final plate which is printed on the front (recto) only. Slight foxing to mounts but clean and lovely. *A lavish production in high Victorian style with central texts with large illuminated first capital letter and other ornaments surrounded by decorative frame. A wide shaped border incorporating a pictorial miniature then decorates the page with floral emblems of vines and trellises in a stunning background of colors. *Based on the idea of a mediaeval illuminated page displaying the virtuosity of Victorian chromo-lithography as beautifully executed by Day & Son. Quite difficult to find, this is a stunning early gift book.

Finely engraved plates (49 of 50) + engraved titlepage. Plates all "del" or "invenit" by Gravelot or Cochin, with various engravers named.. 232 by 153mm Volume III (of IV) octavo "en brochure", uncut thus edges dusty with all illustrated plates loosely laid in but all text pages in gatherings of 8 leaves. Half title + engraved titlepage + 48 plates but the first plate lacking its text [ie pages 1 & 2] + 100pp + partial index (index lacks A-N pp101-4 but p105/6 present covering letters N to Z). The plates are not within the collation and loose (as from the publisher) and only some are numbered but numbers are not sequential and several have the same number although the plates are not the same. A married set in very good condition. Second edition, 1758, London. Original full leather boards. Volume 1 has a new spine (sometime in last 50 years) by Edward F. Gruver, Washington, DC. V.1 has bookplate and pencil notations of prior owner and booksellers, no other markings. The first four leaves after the map are loose at the bottom and remain attached at the top. Volume 2 has the original binding, no interior markings of any kind. Paginates: Volume 1: new blank, old blank, map, 4 leaves, 324, 5 leaves, old blank, new blank; Volume 2: blank, map, 6 leaves, 308, 1 blank (all original). See Howes B968; Hill 218/219; Field 206.
