Vol I: 6 full page colour plates, 5 in black and white including 1 folding, xxiii + 482pp. Vol II: Folding map, black and white plates including one folding, vi + 446pp. Dustjackets faded along the spines with small chips and tears along edges and old price sticker on dustjacket of the second volume, from the library of Professor Anthony Reid with his name and a date front free endpaper. A good hardback set. "Sir John Bowring visited Siam in 1855 to conclude the trade treaty with King Mongkut, which became a prototype for similar arrangements by other European powers. Bowring's model description of the land and people, published in 1857, contains astute observations and a great deal of information. It is still of considerable interest today." Michael Watts - Thailand. A very good set of Bowring's comprehensive work said to be "the best account of Thailand at the middle of the 19th century, when it stood on the threshold of revolutionary change." .
