About This Item
London: Macmillan, 1953. First Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. The interior of the book is clean and unmarked. The red cloth covers are fresh and clean, with just a bit of wear at tips and corners. The gilt spine lettering is still bright. The dust jacket is price-clipped, but is otherwise in very good condition, with light wear an several shallow chips from the top of the spine. The jacket is now in a protective mylar cover. Synopsis: Sophie, a young English widow goes to Kashmire to live with her two children. "She finds a tumbledown house in a valley carpeted with flowers below the Himalayas and settles down to live there, quietly, frugally, poetically, but soon discovers that this jewel of a place she has found for herself is not inertly precious but alive. Sophie blamed herself for what happened, but, just as it was natural for the kingfishers with their colours, to flash in and out of the willows behind the house, so it was natural for Sophie, or her child Teresa, or the little servan Sultan, or young Nabit Dar, or the villagers to behave as they did".
