London: Printed at the Ballantyne Press for Hacon & Ricketts [Vale Press], 1903. Hardcover. Very Good. London, Printed at the Ballantyne Press for Hacon & Ricketts [Vale Press], 1903 (first thus). Demy octavo, lv pages printed in red and black. Original quarter plain linen and blue-grey papered boards, with the printed paper title-label on the front cover; all edges uncut; papered sides a little marked and unevenly tanned, with slight wear to one corner tip; endpapers and adjacent blanks a little browned; a few minor signs of age and use; an excellent copy. One of only 270 copies, including 10 copies on vellum. In his 'Bibliography of the Books issued by Hacon & Ricketts', Charles Ricketts elaborates: 'Edited by Robert Steele, the original spelling being retained ... Composed [by Charles Ricketts] in the fount known as the King's Fount'.
The title page reads in full 'Heirefter followis the Quair maide be king Iames of Scotland the First callit the Kingis Quair and maid quhen His Majestie wes in Ingland'. The poem was composed during James' eighteen years in England (1406-1424) as a hostage of Henry IV, Henry V and Henry VI.
