About This Item
London: Chapman and Hall, 1847. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo 8" - 9" tall. Phiz (Hablot K. Browne). A remarkably attractive exemplar of the original, one-volume classic work of social history and hagiography, illustrated by "Phiz" (Hablot K. Browne, illustrator of ten Charles Dickens novels). Sturdy, attractive, tightly bound, internally clean hardcover copy, bound in marbled paper over boards, creamy brown leather over tips and spine, with unbruised tips, neat and tidy paste-downs but for a bookplate of W. Henry Bracebridge inside front flap; not ex-library, with neither highlighting nor underlining. Five raised bands, rubbed gilt lettering in tooled compartments, gilt lettered title over black leather label. Moderate foxing to interior, but augmented with 38 quite striking steel engravings including at frontis, two-page, depicting a ridiculously "busy" scene of industry, sociality, struggle and life in miniscule detail. x [2], 2-628 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.
