About This Item
Pantheon Books, 1970. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Poor. True first with ""First Edition"" on publisher's page with list of numbers not including ""1"". Book in black cloth with embossed printing on cover , silver letting at spine. Two small white wax stains on front cover at periphery, lower corners are bumped, uppers with a slight curl, little to no edge wear, previous owner's stamp at F.E.P. Text/interior are clean with no marking of any kind, binding is solid. Dust jacket is stained, warped with open tears but fairly intact. R.D. Laing (1927-1969) was an influential Scottish psychiatrist, who held unconventional views and wrote extensively on mental illness. From the dust jacket blurb, speaking of how he came to write of the repeating mantras of psychological conflict that he witnessed between people: ""In these pages I have confined myself to laying out ony some of those I actually have seen. Words that come to mind to name them are: knots, tangles, fankles, impasses, disjunctions, whirligogs, binds. I could have remained closer to the ""raw"" data in which these patterns appear. I could have distilled thRm further towards an abstract logico-mathematical calculus. I hope they are not so schematized that one may not refer back to the very specific experiences from which they derive; yet that they are sufficiently independent of ""content"", for one to divine the final formal elegance in these webs of maya.""
