A well-preserved and very attractive folding globe in original condition with original accompaniments. The six gores that form the globe are held together by cords: by pulling on the sleeves that keep the cords together the globe assembles to show the whole world divided into five main regions of Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas and Australia. The delightful folding frieze which accompanies the globe has three separate images for each of the five regions, with the Australian section including coloured images of the inhabitants of New Holland, Van Diemen's Land, and the Friendly Islands (Tonga).

Designed for geographical instruction in schools, the globe features different handcolouring for each of the main regions, as well as marking the tropics, the ecliptic, and the signs of the zodiac.

The publication is physically similar to a differently titled collapsible globe published by Friedrich G. Schutz in Stuttgart c. 1820, entitled "Darstellung der fünf Welttheile durch Zufammenfetzung in eine Kugel aehnliche Gestalt, zur leichteren Vorstellung und Gebrauch beim geographischen Unterricht in Schulen über die Beschaffenheit & Eintheilung der Erde."

As can easily be imagined with such an attractive and delicate piece, a copy in such fine condition is of some rarity. We have not been able to find any record of the globe in an Australian library, nor does Schutz garner a mention in standard bibliographies such as Tooley's Mapping of Australia.
