About This Item

New York: Henry Holt, 1923. Hardcover. Very Good. First American edition. Preface by Sir Theodore Cook. Ownership signature of Lieutenant-Colonel A.N.S. Strode-Jackson, a horizontal tear to the cloth near the bottom of the spine, an about very good copy, lacking the uncommon dustwrapper. Tipped to the front fly is a brief note to Strode-Jackson from Sir Theodore Cook, informing him that the Belgium Olympic Committee wants to give him a medal, and inquiring where it should be sent. Strode-Jackson rowed and played football and hockey for the College, being Captain of the Hockey team. He won the mile race for Oxford against Cambridge three times and was President of the Oxford University Athletic Club. While still an undergraduate he became an Olympic gold medallist, winning the 1500 metres in the Stockholm Olympics of 1912. He was wounded several times during WWI, and left permanently lame, thus effectively ending his athletic career. A nice association in this important general history of boxing.
