Tokyo: [Bunka Kensetsusha], 1949. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Very Good/None Issued.

Japanese illustrator noted for producing books for children based on Japanese folk tales. He shared a belief with several artist friends that paintings for children should also be art. Their art is part of the Showa Era (1926-89)

Color printed pictorial wrappers Illustrated throughout with images of children's games and festival celebrations. 7.875 by 7.25 inches; 20 by 18.5cm; 44 pages. The paper wraps have light hand-soiling and the pages have evenly and gently age-toned. [Tokyo]: [Bunka Kensetsusha], [1949]

Text in Japanese, Full translation into English on carbon paper laid in at each page [readable cursive pencil] and a full text and image report on tissue paper. [3 typed pages].

The issue is similar to one [1] listing in OCLC [Princeton] [Kodomo no matsuri; Children's Day] but the size is slightly different and this has 4 more pages. The OCLC title is a third edition. A rather scarce piece and unique with the full translation.

Background Information:
Kurosaki Yoshisuke was born in Nagasaki Prefecture. In 1925, he entered the Kawabata Art School, and began studying art full time. He won his first award in the Chuo Art Exhibition in 1927. He joined the New Nippon Doga Group, an organization to promote innovation of children's paintings in 1934. He released works for several magazines, including Kodomo-no-Kuni and Kinder Book. In 1961, he participated in establishing the second Japan Doga Artist Association with Takei Takeo and other painters. His masterpieces include Momotaro [The Peach Boy] and Shita-kiri Suzume [The Tongue-cut Sparrow], which are based on Japanese folk stories.

"In Japan, there are many fancy and interesting tales for children from ancient-time. My works are based on these tales which are very popular in Japan. The drawing technique is traditional Japanese style." Kurosaki Yoshisuke

Description:
London and New York : William Heinemann and Doubleday Page & Co, 1909 A good copy of the 1st edition in the original decorative cloth binding with decorative endpapers and 15 colour plates by Arthur Rackham. Top page edges blue - bottom edges untrimmed. The plates have captioned tissue-guards. Numerous black and white designs and illustrations. The binding has some edge/corner wear, a little fading to the spine and slight nibbling to top and bottom of spine. There is a slight fade to the outer edge of the front board but the beautiful gilt titles and decoration are clean and bright; and a little spotting to the back board. The whole book has a very slight lean. The decorative endpapers have slight browning - the front pastedown has an ink ownership signature. There is a tissue guarded frontispiece and decorative title page. The contents are in very good condition being clean with only the very occasional spot - the colour plates are beautiful. The tissue guard to plate 11 has a crease. A good copy.

Description:
New York: R. Worthington, 1881. I have only been able to locate three other copies of this book in this country, one in the University of Louisville Library, one in the Florida State Library, and one in my own library that I am offering in a separate listing. However, there might be some copies in private hands. "Sunday Chatterbox" is an oversized children's book, measuring 7 5/8 by 10 inches. The book is unpaginated. It is in Good+ condition. The stories, poems, and songs for children are both secular and religious (bible stories). So why is this collectable? Not only due to its rarity, but because of the 90 gorgeous pen-and-ink drawings found throughout. (I suspect that other copies no longer exist because they've been cut up and their illustrations sold as individual prints.) These are also both secular (centering on children) or religious (illustrating bible stories). All are suitable for framing. (Interested buyers should email me and I will send them sample illustrations… Read More
