First appearance of many tales or stories that formed part of the Kolyma Tales of the 1978 complete book. The artistic manner of the stories is similar to that of Chekhov: a brief plot devoted to one incident, an objective, dispassionate narration intended to provide a contrast to the horror of the moment, and a very abrupt ending, often intended to be subtly ironic (Handbook of Russian Literature, p 401).
