Line art diagrams w/ notes at book's end. Set in Medieval Era, Norway. Notes p. 1045-1065; p. 1066, Designer's Note by W.A. Dwiggins. February, 1929, Nobel Prize Edition: 19th printing. Original copyright 1920, 1921, 1922 by H. Aschehoug & Company, Oslo. Borzoi Books English editions published by Alfred A Knopf. Undset's Tetralogy followed: The Master of Hestviken (The Axe, The Snake Pit, In the Wilderness, The Son Avenger. Then: Gunnar's Daughter. Considered her "Modern" novels are 4: Jenny, The Wild Orchid, The Burning Bush, Ida Elisabeth. Also, Undset published her collection of Essays: Stages on the Road. All made available in English by Knopf during the early 20th century. The New York Times reviewer wrote of Sigrid Undset's novels, "Her supreme achievement is in the appealing humanity and fallibility of her characters." Translator for this trilogy was primarily Charles Archer, with J.S. Scott assisting for "The Bridal Wreath".
Synopsis
Kristin Lavransdatter is the common name for a trilogy of historical novels written by Nobel laureate Sigrid Undset. The individual novels are Kransen (The Wreath), first published in 1920, Husfrue (Wife), published in 1921, and Korset (The Cross), published in 1922. Kransen and Husfrue have also been published in English translation under the titles The Bridal Wreath and The Mistress of Husaby.
