About This Item

London: Constable and Company Ltd. Fair with no dust jacket. 1917. First Edition. Hardcover. Green cloth boards, which a former owner has attempted to 'improve' by re-titling/lettering the spine (which has faded) in ink. The rubbed and worn extremities have been coloured green in an attempt to match the cloth colour. No dustjacket. The inner hinges have been reglued neatly but, apart from some light foxing/browning mainly to the first few and the last few pages, internally the book is Good plus to VG with no marks. An old Mudies Library Label on the front pastedown. A Previous owners' name/date on the front free e/p and again to the top corner of the Title Page. (x) + (2) + 288 pp. Overall, apart from the 'doctored' boards which are now protected in a clear plastic book cover and look OK, this is actually internally a Clean, Tight and Sound copy of the First Edition. Scarce. Not a collector's copy however. " The author's first book. Written on Active Service but always a reassuring distance from the front line ..... "Servants in the Army are an integral part of an Officer's life...." . Agate became a British diarist and critic, and a notable collector of aphorisms. In the period between the wars, he was one of Britain's most popular theatre critics. He was on the staff of Manchester Guardian (1907-14) ; drama critic for Saturday Review (1921-23) , and the Sunday Times (1923-47). " ; 8vo .
