Condition: Good, with light shelfwear to covers. Some light foxing to fore-edge of textblock. Inscribed by the author to his aunt (Vera) on the front endpaper. Also loosely inserted is a letter from the author to his aunt. Dustjacket condition: Fair, generally shelfworn with some creasing to front cover of jacket. Not price-clipped. 187pp. 8 b/w illustrations plus frontispiece. This book by Gervas Huxley (cousin of Aldous and Julian and husband of Elspeth) which paints a picture of life in one of the wealthiest of the great ruling Whig families in the first half of the 19th century is based mainly on the unpublished letters and diaries of Lady Elizabeth, daughter of the Duchess-Countess of Sutherland, wife of the second Marquess of Westminster, and mother of the first Duke. Family life, politics, the social round in town and country, hunting, shooting, travel at home and abroad, and the growth of the enormous Grosvenor estates are all fully covered..
