About This Item

NY, Scott Foresman, 1899. Very Good/Unknown. 16 mo., hardcover, light sun to spine, notes on inside cover else VG in gray tweed boards. Edited for school use by William Moody. The Lake English classics. 264 pp. A poem in six cantos. With 25, 000 copies sold in eight months, it broke all records for the sale of poetry, and Scott's fame spread beyond Great Britain to the United States. The critics almost matched the enthusiasm of the public. In the Edinburgh Review, the habitually glacial Francis Jeffrey felt it far exceeded its predecessors: the story was 'constructed with infinitely more skill and address' and there was 'a larger variety of characters, more artfully and judiciously contrasted'. Frontis map of the "lake". Born in Scotl; and in 1771, Scott was a beloved prolific writer.

Synopsis

The Lady of the Lake marked the pinnacle of Scott's popularity as a poet. With 25,000 copies sold in eight months, it broke all records for the sale of poetry. Known as a romantic poem, it tells about love and honor amidst a bitter rivalry between King James V and the Douglas family. The book is set in the Trossachs region of Scotland and  it is composed of six cantos, each concern the action of a single day.
