Boston: Crosby & Ainsworth. Hardcover. Good/Very Good. 16mo., 313-472 pagination. Not dated but dated ownership signature of 1868. Uncommon early edition with cloth spine over printed paper-covered boards. Titles on spine in gilt as well as printed on front board. Solid and fairly clean throughout. Staining and soiling to boards with printing fading as is the spine gilt. wear to edges and tips. Front end-paper torn at the corners. Rear hinge starting but firm. Not perfect but still a pleasant and uncommon collectable copy.

Synopsis

The Lady of the Lake marked the pinnacle of Scott's popularity as a poet. With 25,000 copies sold in eight months, it broke all records for the sale of poetry. Known as a romantic poem, it tells about love and honor amidst a bitter rivalry between King James V and the Douglas family. The book is set in the Trossachs region of Scotland and  it is composed of six cantos, each concern the action of a single day.
