About This Item
cat40a. NY: Scribner's, 1884. First edition. Gray pictorial cloth, brown cloth spine; front cover designed and lettered in black & gilt, spine lettered in brown on a gilt panel. Green patterned end papers. Rough repair to inner front hinge, a few minor marks to cloth, but a clean and bright very good copy for the most part. Pasted into this copy are six clipped newspaper bits about Stockton, several mentioning this book. Four are pasted to the second leaf, and two on the verso of the contents page. In addition, a prior owner has copied out two lengthy reviews on the second blank (in pen) and the upper half-title leaf (in pencil). Though not called for, this copy has an engraved frontispiece portrait of Stockton, with a facsimile signature beneath, which looks like it has always been there, but which was presumably inserted not long after publication. In addition to the title story, this collection contains a couple of supernatural stories. Bleiler: Guide to Supernatural Fiction: 1537. Wright III: 5242. Queen's Quorum 12.
