About This Item

Lincoln, NB: Univ of Nebraska Press, 1985. First Edition, First Printing . Soft cover. Fine/None as Issued. Text/BRAND NEW. Soft cover/NF w/light rubs. Travel narrative of an English gentlewoman's visit to America's West in 1883. First published in 1898. Rose Pender and her husband James (created baronet in 1987) were seasoned travellers in the best Victorian tradition; their earlier tour of Africa is chronicled in: No Telegraph, or, A Trip to Our Unconnected Colonies (1878). With a keen eye, curiosity and sensitivity for the exotic, this volume records the America she experiences from New York to San Francisco, and back. Lady Pender shares her revulsion for dirt, dislike for the Irish, horror at bed bugs , but nevertheless concludes with, "And so ends the record of our most enjoyable fourth months' travels through the United States." Fine record of a time past.
