About This Item
13TH PRINTING CODE E-I FOR MAY,1934. INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY AUTHOR ON THE 1ST LEAF, RED CLOTH COVERS WITH GOLD LETTERING, AGE TONED PAGE ENDS AND A FADED SPINE MAKING THE TITLE HARD TO READ, LIGHT BUMPING/BRUSING TO SPINE ENDS, BOOK IS TIGHT BUT SEEMS A LITTLE PULLED TOWARD THE BOTTOM CORNERS.NO OTHER MARKINGS. A DECENT AUTOGRAPHED COPY. I actually read this book a few years ago when I read a story about how hard it is to find a true 1st edition with a dust jacket. If you read it, you too will understand why it was on the Preacher's book-burning list, it was banned in many parts of the country on the local level and the story goes that if you had a copy it was usually hidden inside a different dustjacket to cover up the title. A lot of the books were passed between other women this way, so the menfolk didn't catch them reading it. It is a strong story and I believe it does show a way of life not too far removed by time here in the south. I see why it won the Pulitzer and it really did deserve it, unlike many others that did win. A copy by the Franklin Library comes with this one. It's the signature that gives the book its value.
