About This Item

Houghton Mifflin & Co., 1903. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. Boston: Houghton Mifflin & Co., 1903. 8vo. 281 pp. First edition of the author's first book -essays on the deserts of California. A very good copy with rubbing to the corners (but not worn through), and the spine ends are softened. Front hinge weak but holding. Also, the last page of text is clipped deeply, but not affecting the text. No writing or other defects. Very good.

Synopsis

A stunning tribute to the savage beauty of the area known as Death Valley. To most travelers it is a parched, empty territory, unwelcoming and forgiving. In a collection of essays that date back almost a century, naturalist and writer Mary Austin (1868-1934) breathes life into the desert landscape, describing its savage beauty, its plants and animals, and the occasional human visitor.
