About This Item

London England: Weidenfeld & Nicolson. Good. 1970. 1st Trade Paperback. SofCover. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall 0297000608 Trade Paperback Trade Paperback. Slight foxing to edge. Slight shelf wear to edges of cover. Creases to front cover. In this book Sir Maurice Bowra gives a descriptive and critical history of the most important works of Greek literature from its first known beginning to the Alexandrian poets of the third century BC. He writes primarily for those who wish to know what Greek literature is like and what it has to offer to non-specialists who feel shy of approaching it without some guidance. He considers its main authors and achievements, and not only discusses their chief qualities, but sets them in their historical circumstances as important part of Greek history. They are both artistic and social documents, and must be considsered in both aspects, since this greatly enhances our understanding of them. The book eschews technicalities and uses translations throughout, but the author has absorbed much modern scholarship and makes unobtrusive use of it. The illustrations are intended partly to illustrate themes and legends treated by Greek authors, partly to convey some idea of the different stages of Greek society for which poets, historians and philosophers wrote. Illustrated with 40 pages of photographs. 284 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.) .
