About This Item
London: Geoffrey Bles, 1928 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First Edition. 8vo. vii, 244 pp, list of 4 b&w illustrations, 18 chapters. The Famous Trial Series. First Edition, September 1928. "Henri Désiré Landru (1869-1922) was a French serial killer and real-life 'Bluebeard', began his murderous career by putting advertisements in the lonely hearts sections in Paris newspapers, usually along the lines of 'Widower with two children, aged 43, with comfortable income, serious and moving in good society, desires to meet widow with a view to matrimony'. Between 1914 and 1918, Landru claimed 11 victims: 10 women plus the teenaged son of one of his victims. Landru stood trial on all 11 counts of murder in November 1921. Convicted on all counts, he was sentenced to death, and Landru was the inspiration for Charlie Chaplin's film Monsieur Verdoux (1947), and Bluebeard's Ten Honeymoons (1960) with George Sanders." 3/4" tear to cloth at top edge joint with minor edgewear. Clean, tight and strong binding with no underlining, highlighting or marginalia. Red cloth..
