About This Item

Large Falcon etching printed in 1772. Overall image is 12.5" by 17.75." Etching is 11" by 7." Original plate from "Collection d'oiseaux les plus rares." Paris: L.C. Desnos. By: Jonston, John and Nicolas Robert. This beautiful etching depicting six birds of prey is from an 18th-century reissue of a 17th-century natural history work. Five of the six birds hold their prey captive. One holds a snake in their beak, two hold smaller birds in their talons, one holds a frog in their talons and one holds a small rodent. The artist Nicolas Robert was a French draftsman and printmaker and was appointed painter to the King in 1664. The 700 original natural history paintings form the core of the world renowned collection of natural history studies at the Musée National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris.
