About This Item

New York: Grosset & Dunlap, 1933. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. 12mo. Orig. brown cloth, B&W pictorial onlay. 301 pp. Bumping and rubbing to spine ends and corners. Dust jacket is price clipped, sunned to spine, worn to joints and fore edges, chips to spine ends (some minor loss). Long tear to front joint, repaired to reverse with tape. Few American novels have the fullness and real understanding that are part of this novel. It is the story of a Connecticut town and the people who live there, chief among whom is the town doctor. In the doctor are centred all the threads of dramatic interest, the relations of friends and enemy, proud with poor, and old-time New England folk with the late-comers and outsiders; and through the doctor's actions which carry the story along with steadily increasing interest, the life of the whole community is revealed as well as the individual lives that give the town its many-sided, moving, but unchanging character.
