The book is in near fine condition, whistle-clean inside and out, with a vintage gift inscription "To Howard on Fathers Day and dated Jan. 16 th. 1946 on the ffep. The dust jacket is protected by a brodart cover and is price intact ($2.50) but shows top edge wear in the form of chipping a 1/2" by 2 & 1/2" piece missing atop back jacket cover, edge wear on head and tail of spine dj. The clothe covered boards are in great shape with gilt and brown over a brilliant green. The corners and binding are strong and the only very mild edge wear on head and tail of spine and one tiny bit on top edge of front board (1/8") of barely noticeable whiteness. Included inside are 3 actual newspaper articles from when Ernie Pyle was attached to the Navy early in 1945. --- IN THE MARIANAS ISLANDS-- (Delayed) The dates of each article was had written in pen on each one. (Fri.Mar.9, Mon. March 12, Tues. Mar. 13.) Looking on the back of each article I discovered that this newspaper was from somewhere in Ohio, Cincinnati, Dayton, or Cleveland. There are some news items concerning the whereabouts of some of the local servicemen that recovering from injuries in England... There is also a later clipping reviewing the book "Ernie's War: The Best of Ernie Pyle's World War II Dispatches" Random House - dated Sunday, August 24, 1986. The Cincinnati Enquirer. This is Ernie Pyle's last book. The last photo in the book is of a soldier with a bayoneted rifle looking at a road sign staked in the ground. It reads in big hand painted letters "AT THIS SPOT THE 77 th INFANTRY DIVISION LOST A BUDDY ERNIE PYLE, 18 APRIL 1945." His luck ran out. A Japanese bullet killed Ernie Pyle on that above date on Ie Shima, and Americans lost their greatest and best-loved correspondent.
