About This Item

In Two Volumes. (London: Smith, Elder: 1867) First Edition. Gilt pictorial cloth (that is, hard covers) pp. iv, 384; iv, 384. With thirty-two illustrations by George H. Thomas, but one is lacking in this copy, ie there are only thirty-one are present. First Edition. Head and foot of spines and lower edges and corners of boards worn; the rear external hinge on volume one is split, and volume two has small spots of white paint near the edge of the front board, a splash which has also speckled the fore edge, without further damage. Volume One, which lacks a plate at page six, has the bookplate of Thomas Elder on front fixed endpaper and a few scattered library and ownership stamps, two of which, including that on the title page, have been blacked out; some of the upper margins of Volume One and the lower margins of Volume Two have some dampstaining, most extensive to the plates of Volume Two where the mark has extended onto the engraved pictures; marginal fraying to two leaves of Volume One, which have been inexpertly re-attached; nevertheless still a good study or reading set.

Synopsis

Anthony Trollope was a masterful satirist with an unerring eye for the most intrinsic details of human behavior and an imaginative grasp of the preoccupations of nineteenth-century English novels. In The Last Chronicle of Barset , Mr. Crawley, curate of Hogglestock, falls deeply into debt, bringing suffering to himself and his family. To make matters worse, he is accused of theft, can't remember where he got the counterfeit check he is alleged to have stolen, and must stand trial. Trollope's powerful portrait of this complex man-gloomy, brooding, and proud, moving relentlessly from one humiliation to another-achieves tragic dimensions.
