Thomas Y. Crowell, New York, 1896. Hardcover. Very Good. 1896. 421 pages. Beige buckram hardcover with titling and elaborate decoration stamped in blue and green, gilt titling at spine. Illustration plate to front panel. Boards are in excellent condition, with slight general edgewear and lightly bumped spine tips. Minor rubbing to the right corners of cover illustration, and a small (< 1/2in) faint stain along bottom edge of illustration - easy to miss, and without effect on boards. Spine square. Binding tight and sound. Browning at free endpapers. Inscription at ffep detailing that this copy was a school prize, dated 1914. Interior else clean, very lightly age-toned but otherwise unmarked. Frontis with tissue guard. Photos available upon request.
Synopsis
The Last of the Mohicans is a historical novel by James Fenimore Cooper, first published in January 1826. It was one of the most popular English-language novels of its time. Its narrative flaws were criticized from the start, and its length and elaborately formal prose style have reduced its appeal to later readers. Mark Twain, in particular, was critical of the author's style: "Cooper’s art has some defects.
