About This Item

Indianapolis & New York: The Bobbs-Merrill Company. Good/No Dust Jacket. 1943. First Edition. Hard Cover. FIRST EDITION. 367 pages, with index, blue and white endpaper maps, 2 maps within, and photo illustrations. NO DUST JACKET. Maroon cloth binding is solid, but shows heavy wear at edges and bumping at corners, with boards in some spots showing through the cloth. Interior shows some foxing (discoloring) to text areas, but is otherwise clean with no marking or writing within. Not including the frontispiece the list of illustrations notes 14 pages of photos added; 12 pages of photos are present. There is no evidence of the page being excised, it could be a printers' error . or - it is possible that page was never inserted due to war time censoring (This is a rare WW II war-time publication telling the story of a battle before all was concluded and these publications were subjected to war time censors). A scarce first edition of a fascinating first person battle narrative by Lt. Col. Walter L. J. Bayler as told to Cecil Carnes. Also includes chapters on Midway and Ewa and Guadalcanal. .

Synopsis

With Borrowed Time and Becoming a Man-the 1992 National Book Award winner for nonfiction-this collection completes Paul Monette’s autobiographical writing. Brimming with outrage yet tender, this is a “remarkable book” (Philadelphia Inquirer).
