About This Item

London:: Collins, 1978.. 1st Edition.. Hardbound . BINDING/CONDITION: brown binding with gilt vignette and spine text; a Very Good book, with a Very Good dust jacket; publisher's price on the jacket flap is intact.. 8vo (8.5 inches tall) . Map endpapers. Description: Captain James Cook sails from Plymouth in the three-masted collier, Resolution, in search of the fabled North-West Passage. It is his third voyage of discovery and t his is the story he might have written. An imagined diary, full of detail and unlike Cook's journals -- which were official records and impersonal -- this is a highly personal and self-revealing account. Innes states, ''In presenting it as Cook's own writing, I am conscious of having taken a great liberty, but it has been done as a labour of love and in an honest endeavour to set right the impression left by the official Journals. Cook was neither a dull man, nor unemotional and inhuman. He could not have been, or he would not have achieved what he did.''
