A smart first edition, first impression of Sir Edmund Hillary's account of the 1955-8 Commonwealth Transantarctic Expedition, in the unclipped dust wrapper. The first edition, first printing of this work. Sir Edmund Hillary tells of his experiences during the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic expedition of 1955-8, expedition that successfully completed the first overland crossing of Antarctica via the South Pole. Led by British explorer Vivian Fuchs, Hillary was the leader of the New Zealand Ross Sea Support team, which included scientists participating in International Geophysical Year research. With the unclipped dust wrapper. Illustrated with black and white photographic plates and other figures. In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally very smart with minor shelf wear and minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. The dust wrapper is unclipped and smart with only minor shelf wear and a minor chipping, minor sunning to the spine. With R S Boumphrey's bookplate to the front pastedown. Loosely inserted, two newspaper cuttings concerning Antarctica and HIllary. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean, only minor offsetting to p. 155 due to newspaper cuttings loosely inserted. Illustrated with black and white photographic plates and other figures. Very Good Indeed
