About This Item

London: John Murray, 1851. First edition. Leather. Good. 7.5" by 4.5". None. A smart first edition set of Lavengro, complete in three volumes and bound in full calf. The first edition of the work. With a frontispiece portrait to volume one. Half titles present. Bound without advertisements. Bookplate of Henry B. H. Beaufoy to front pastedown of all volumes. Lavengro is one of Borrow's best known books. He wrote novels and travelogues based on his experiences travelling around Europe. As a genre, Lavengro falls between a memoir and novel. A classic of nineteenth century literature, it follows the son of an officer who after serving an apprenticeship as a lawyer, becomes a Grub Street Hack, allowing him to observe London low-life. In full calf bindings. Externally generally smart with rubbing to the boards and extremities. Loss to spine labels. Bookplates to front pastedowns. Internally firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with just minor age toning. Private library stamp to recto of front free endpaper. Good

Synopsis

Lavengro: The Scholar, the Gypsy, the Priest is a work by George Borrow, falling somewhere between the genres of memoir and novel, which has long been considered a classic of 19th century English literature. According to the author lav-engro is a Romany word meaning "word master". The historian G. M. Trevelyan called it "a book that breathes the spirit of that period of strong and eccentric characters".
