About This Item
From dust jacket flaps:
In a society governed by laws, there are perhaps no more important members than those who maintain order and ensure justice. Some use a gun and a badge, some an attache case and a book of statutes. But they all share a common zeal—to safeguard the lives and rights of their fellow citizens. Now in Lawmen, Crimebusters and Champions of Justice, these guardian angels, the institutions for which some of them work, and the system itself are given their due.
In the first part of the book, "The Men," you will meet a diverse group of dedicated individuals. There is Wyatt Earp, the legendary lawman of Dodge City, Kansas; Wild Bill Hickok, the equally famous marshal of Abiline, Kansas; and Pat Garrett, the Lincoln County sheriff who gunned down Billy the Kid. There are the Old West's modern counterparts, Eddie Egan, the dogged detective who broke the famous "French Connection" narcotics ring; and Frank Serpico the cop whose Crusade against corruption in the New York Police Department resulted in the resignations of more than 200 crooked officers there are eminent jurists, Oliver Wendell Holmes, considered the father of modern American jurisprudence; and Thurgood Marshall, the crusading attorney who became the first African-American justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. There are prosecutors like Vincent Bugliosi, the man who convicted Charles Manson; and Thomas Dewey, the man who convicted Lucky Luciano. And there are defense attorneys, including F. Lee Bailey, who has probably served on more headline-making cases than any lawyer in history; and Clarence Darrow, perhaps the most famous lawyer of all time.
In the book's second part, "The Institutions," you'll go inside the halls of six world-renowned law-enforcement agencies. Among them are Scotland Yard, the very embodiment of scientific criminology and the use of deductive reasoning; the Surete-Nationale, France's national crime-fighting force founded in 1809 by an ex-convict; Interpol, the international crime-fighting organization; and the FBI, whose "G-Men" became legends in the 1930s, as they tracked down such notorious gangsters as John Dillinger and Machine Gun Kelly.
The book's final part, "The System at Work," reveals the many facets of the law's application and impact. There are congressional investigations into such notorious national scandals as Watergate and the Iran-Contra Affair; Supreme court decisions like a Roe v. Wade and Brown v.the Board of Education, which altered the very fabric of daily life; and celebrated trials from the 1921 murder trial of Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti to the Rosenberg espionage trial in 1951 to the conspiracy-to-riot trial of the Chicago Seven in 1969.
Accompanied by more than 100 vivid photos—portraits and action shots—the lively text by John Slate and R. U. Steinberg brings to life the people who make the law, the people who interpret the law, and the people who enforce the law. These are stories that are sure to fascinate and intrigue anyone with an interest in justice and law and order.
John H. Slate is employed in the Photograph Collections of the Barker Texas History Center at the University of Texas at Austin.
R. U. Steinberg, a 1985 journalism graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, has a writing job in state government and is a columnist for The Austin Chronicle.
