Pencil drawing on paper, signed "A.L.R. 23" (lower right), mounted to board, with artist's estate stamp and docketing in pencil on mount. 14 x 10 in. An early commercial work by the great American sporting artist Aiden Lassell Ripley (1896-1969) - an original pencil drawing for the 1924 Newbery Medal-winning The Dark Frigate, by Charles Boardman Hawes. The illustration, which depicts Captain Candle of The Rose of Devon, appears facing page 70.
The Dark Frigate tells the story of young Philip Marsham and his adventures among seamen and pirates in 17th century England. The Rose of Devon, pictured here with her captain, is soon to be captured by a band of pirates led by Tom Jordan, known as the Old One.
With a second printing copy of The Dark Frigate.
