About This Item

This copy of Lectures and Biographical Sketches by Ralph Waldo Emerson was published in 1891 in Boston by Houghton, Mifflin and Company and printed by The Riverside Press in Cambridge. It is Volume X of Emerson's Complete Works. The book, which measures approximately 5 ½ inches wide by 7 ½ inches tall by 1 1/8 inches thick, contains 463 pages devoted to Emerson's works that can be characterized as part of his lectures and biographical sketches activities.

The book is hard bound in dark cloth covered boards with gilt lettering on the spine. A photographic carte de visite picturing Emerson is attached to the inside front cover. An inscription, reading "To Henry Hunt Clark, Sept. 15, 1896, from Jane Orr Guild" appears on a front free end paper. The pages, which are gilt decorated on the top surface, are faintly tanned at the outer edges. There are occasional pencil marking on some page borders representing thoughts from a previous reader. The text is clear and easily read. The overall condition of the book is near fine.

The illustrations accompanying this description show the book's covers, Emerson's carte de visite, the Title page, the Note by J.e. Cabot, and the table of Contents.
