Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1938. First edition. Includes poems of the Civil War as well as a revised version of THE TALL MEN, his second volume of verse. 8vo gray cloth boards stamped in gilt and black; 137 pages. Bright and near fine in very good dust jacket with shallow chipping, few creased tears, and spine somewhat toned and showing few small stains. TOGETHER WITH "THE NINTH PART OF SPEECH; A Verse Letter: To Louis Zahner," a 5-page offprint from The Virginia Quarterly Review, Vol. 36, No. 4, Autumn 1960. INSCRIBED BY DAVIDSON, "For Jane and Walter Sullivan/ with best wishes/ Donald Davidson" at head of first page. Three 6.5 x 9.75" leaves, stapled; pages numbered 533-38. Creases from folding otherwise near fine. The Sullivans were friends and former students of Davidson at Vanderbilt University. Donald Grady Davidson (1893-1968) was a founding member of the "Fugitives" and the overlapping "Southern Agrarians" with a troublesome past as a segregationist and Confederate apologist. Walter Sullivan (1924-2006) was an author, critic, and authority on Southern literature who went on to be a longtime Vanderbilt University professor himself. His wife, Jane Harrison Sullivan (1923-2022), taught English literature at Aquinas College.
