About This Item
Synopsis
The Legend of Good Women is a poem in the form of a dream vision by Geoffrey Chaucer. In the dream, his queen Alceste reprimands Chaucer for his writings that depicted women in a poor manner, and to make recompense, he writes of the virtuous women in history: Cleopatra , Thisbe , Dido, Hypsipyle, Medea, Lucrece , Ariadne, Philomela, Phyllis and Hypermnestra. This is one of the first important works to feature the iambic pentameter or decasyllabic couplets, which he would use later in his more famous work, The Canterbury Tales.
