Very Good/No Dust Jacket. 1st Edition. xiii, 497 pages, [8 pages publishers advertisements], illustrated, 16 plates, 4 double page maps. Engraved portrait frontispiece and facsimile signature of Melville protected by tissue guard. Original gilt-blocked pictorial cloth. previous owners signature dated 1933 on front end paper, shelf wear and some minor bumping/ rubbing to covers, contents clean. Melville was chief engineer aboard the Jeannette in De Long’s expedition of 1879-81. He here relates the voyage, the drift and loss of the ship in June of 1881 in the East Siberian Sea, the crew’s retreat by sledge and boat towards the Siberian coast, the separation of the two parties, and Melville’s search for De Long in the Lena River region of Yakutia.
