An autograph poem entitled “A Suggestion To Need Of Our Nation”, praising the temperance movement: “…In course direct to each and all In a ‘temperance’ line As a career of uprightedness Ever true to a man’s life When met with books of instruction Through and in ‘hours of time’ For that ‘Guiding Star’ of one’s parents In this our nation’s strife To that turn which may unto one And all in manner guide To assistance of poor and weak Who have fully abstained From the habit of destruction Great in the liquor tide To that…of life whereby Nature’s arm is sustained So that ‘Noble Guidance’ in strength Of ‘Powerful Trust’ divine Which is permitted with care Unto churchmen direct To the parents of all vote In enlightenment truly fine To support of our government With education correct. Fore since establishment of the ‘Constitution’ to that age So noble to name of our nation At ‘Washington's great hand’ Wherein one country and more Has witnessed great adage To murals of freedom and knowledge…”.
