Connecticut, 1862. unbound. 6 pages (front and back), 8 x 5 inches, on "Fifth Reg't" (Union Army) letterhead featuring a distinctive fighting dog logo, "Camp Near Hancock" (Connecticut), February 11, 1862. This long and detailed letter to a friend and fellow minister contains much news of Camp Huntington and the men in it, in part: "...You know for a long time Gambling has been practiced in the Reg't. I wrote Col. Ferry a letter in regard to it. Signed it A Lover of Morality. The next day he issued an order prohibiting it...All say they are glad it has been stopped except a few Such as the Johnsons...The best of the joke is no one Knows who set the Ball in motion. I hope you will write when you can. I shall be happy to hear from you..." Natural folds; excellent legibility. Near fine condition.<br/> <br/> Noted archaeologist of biblical sites and highly educated Congregational minister, chaplain to the 49th U.S. Colored Infantry at Vicksburg during the Civil War.<br/> <br/>
